Quotes about change and home as I prepare to move

This coming week my husband and I complete what we have spent the last 3 months working toward – moving house. Over the past 3 months, we’ve cleared over 20 years of clutter, downsized, cleaned, staged and sold a house, found a new home, packed, and took care of the many details involved with a change of address. While we are busy with the final stages of moving, I share with you some quotes about change and home.

Change

Be the change that you wish to see in the world. Mahatma Ghandi

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.  Leo Tolstoy

You’re always you and that don’t change, and you’re always changing, and there is nothing you can do about it.  Neil Gaiman

Change is good. You go first. Kenneth F. Murphy

It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.  W. Edwards Deming

If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies.  Author Unknown

Home

Where we love is home – home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.  Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Home is any four walls that enclose the right person.  Helen Rowland

Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do. . . but how much love we put into that action.  Mother Teresa

Laughter is what makes a home warm, and what makes a work place human.  Catherine Pulsifer

I live in my own little world. But its ok, they know me there.  Lauren Myracle (okay maybe this isn’t technically about home, but I liked it)

All journeys eventually end in the same place, home.  Chris Geiger

The ornament of a house is the friends who frequent it.  Ralph Waldo Emerson.

I’m looking forward to getting settled in my home and filling it with laughter and the ornament of friends.

Did any of these quotes strike a chord with you? Do you have another favourite quote about change or home?

  1. Donna, I moved to a new city a few years ago. I am accustomed to moving…I’ve lived several places. But this one was particularly difficult and the only reason I can think of, is that it just got harder with age! Laugh! So I wish you the very best in this endeavor… it will all settle down in time. In the meantime my most favorite of those wonderful quotes is: Laughter is what makes a home warm, and what makes a work place human. Catherine Pulsifer
This is what makes my world go around:)

  2. Good luck with the move, Donna. Our most difficult move was the one from Birds Hill Oark to Matlock, as how much stuff we had accumulated over 25 years and the need to rid ourselves of it was so what overwhelming. Hope everything goes smoothly for you.

    • We’ve gotten rid of a lot of things with this move too. It has made it a lot of work, but things are going pretty smoothly so far and I’m looking forward to living “lighter”.

  3. I live in my own little world. But its ok, they know me there. < I like that quote. I’m an introvert so home is really my sanctuary where I feel safe and can recharge. My husband and I have moved around a lot but have finally started to take root where we are now, so I hope we don’t have to leave for awhile. It can be renewing but also very stressful until it’s over.

  4. Moving house is always a big deal and even though I move all the time it does not make the home move any easier. Purging, packing, lugging, unlugging, unpacking…oy! I like the quote from RWE about the house ornaments; very true.

    • It’s been almost twenty years since I’ve last moved house, so I’ve forgotten a lot about the work. Not to mention have had time to collect a lot of stuff I don’t need. But I will be moved soon and inviting friends over to adorn the house.

  5. I hope you enjoy your new home. I do envy you that you were able to get rid of the clutter. When you live in a home for years and you collect items, it is hard to part with them unless you are forced into a situation of moving. I envy you.

  6. Hi Donna, You’re almost there! Good for you! When my husband and I moved to Arizona, we had to sort through 34 years of living in the house, things left over from my 2 grown kids, some from my first husband, the things that we put together from our previous experiences, way, way too much. My favorite of the quotes is “Change is good. You go first.” Kenneth F. Murphy which reflects my procrastinating nature.

    • It is amazing the amount of stuff we collect when we stay in one place a long time. And the change gets harder the longer we procrastinate. “Change is good. You go first.” is a favourite saying among some of my friends.

  7. You seem to have coped well with the move. I am one of those people who doesn’t like change so am never keen on moving house. We just moved offices last week which means a longer drive to work and I am not at all happy. I hope that your Quote about Change being good works for me.

    • Some changes are hard to deal with, like a longer drive to work, but change is inevitable and I’ve found that most of the time it is good. I’m looking forward to my move.

  8. Donna, we haven’t moved in years, but back in the seventies it seemed we moved every year and what a hassle, leaving one place and moving into the new place. It is just so much work but think about this – soon you will be able to put your feet up in a home you love.
    My favourite quotations:
If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies – Author unknown
I live in my own little world but that’s ok, they know me there – Lauren Myracle
Good luck and all the best,
    Lenie

  9. Hi Donna,
I especially liked “It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory,” by W. Edwards Deming. Indeed! Thanks for the quotes to charge up my day.
    Ramona

  10. Hope, you r move brings you joy and peace. Love the quotes.

  11. Moving is never fun, but the decluttering part is one of the positives. I’m not sure if it’s a quote that’s attributable to someone or not, but my general life philosophy is that change is the only constant. Over the years, I’ve realized I don’t deal very well with change. Even then, my husband flew to a job interview a couple of weeks ago and that alone was enough to make me take a few bags of stuff to Goodwill.

  12. I understand this blog so much. My house is nothing but memories and a collection from me, and my parents and brothers and sisters. I inherited my house a few years ago, and I am still going through everything, seeing if it has any meaning for me, or my siblings. The unfortunate part is when I am going through all this clutter, I am gathering more.

    • It is hard to sort through inherited stuff and decide what to keep and not keep. I found that it was easier to know what was important to me after a period of years.

  13. Good luck with completing the move! It can be such an exciting time or a daunting task…I hope it’s the former for you! I loved practically all of the quotes but especially the Leo Tolstoy and Ralph Waldo Emerson ones. I have a favorite quote also from RWE that isn’t specifically about home but could certainly relate to change….or anything for that matter is this, “The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.”

    • The move is both daunting and exciting. Fortunately the daunting part is mostly behind us and it is now mostly exciting. We’re into the reward of a thing well done.

  14. so glad that your experience with changing homes has been a good one. there is a big difference between a house and a home. so glad that your new place will be a home full of friends family and many new memories. take care, max

    • Thanks Max. We got our furniture moved in yesterday and although there are still lots of boxes to unpack, it feels like home. And a couple of friends have already dropped by to see how we’re making out.

  15. My new favorite: “Change is good. You go first.” I wish you all the best getting moved and settled. That’s a big job!

  16. I wish you all the best in your move. we just consolidated two homes into one and move so I know how difficult a move can be. I do hope everything goes the way you wish it to.

    • Thanks Susan. Things are going well. We downsized and got rid of a bunch of stuff. It has been a lot of work. Not as much work as consolidating two households into one, but it does give me some understanding of what you’ve gone through. I hope it is working out the way you wish too.

  17. Alll the best with the final stretch Donna. I know how daunting it can be. As for a quote, there is the popular one, the only constant in life is change and I thrive on change hence I do not stress much in life because change is guaranteed.
