An article appeared in this weekend's Winnipeg Free Press about the garden folly. It made me remember a few of the garden follies I'd seen in my travels.

1) the Ionic Rotunda at Petwork House in West Sussex, England was built in 1766 and is reminiscent of the Temple of Vesta at Trivoli, Italy.

2) John's Folly at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden just outside Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was built in 2009 with Manitoba Tyndall Stone.

3) The Great Pagoda in Kew Gardens, London, England was built in 1762.

4) The Ruined Archway, also in Kew Gardens, was built in 1759 to deliberately look like a ruin.

A folly is an architectural garden structure with no purpose other than to be decorative or add a whimsical or eccentric element to the landscape. They were prevalent in the English landscape garden of the 1700s.

The Monument to the Women of World War II is a British national war memorial situated on Whitehall in London, to the north of the Cenotaph. It was sculpted by John W. Mills, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II and dedicated by Baroness Boothroyd in July 2005.⁠

Today is 4-H day in Canada. 4-H is one of the world's largest youth organization and is focused on nurturing responsible, caring and contributing leaders who are committed to positively impacting their communities. Were you involved in 4-H as a youth? I was. I learned gardening and cooking through 4-H. My sister learned to sew. (I believe she was also in the garden club.) My mother taught sewing. The 4-H motto is to learn by doing. Do you remember the 4-H pledge?

My head to clearer thinking, My heart to greater loyalty, My hands to larger service, My health to better living For my club, my community, my country, and my world.
